He made his one day and Test debuts for Australia, in 1995 aged 20. He was in and out of the team early on, as a lack of form and a few minor indiscretions hindered his progress. He returned stronger and became, one day captain in 2002 and Test captain in 2004.

He has scored over 12300 test runs and is second only to the legend, that is Sachin Tendulkar. He is currently averaging, well over 50 runs per innings.

He became the first Australian captain to lead his side to a 5 -0 Ashes whitewash in 86 years. He is currently under intense pressure after a run of poor results, for Australia but, he is a fighter and if anyone can lead them out of the form they are currently in, it will be Ricky Ponting.
