Kookaburra History

The Kookaburra company, was founded in 1890. They traded under the name of A G Thompson Pty Ltd, after their founder, Alfred Grace Thompson, for the first 100 years, only in 1990 did they become known as Kookaburra Sport. Like us, they are a family company and still have many members of the Thompson family, involved with the day to day running of the company.Alfred, was a saddle and harness maker, with a love for sport. He quickly established himself, as one of the leading hand made cricket ball manufacturers. The Kookaburra Turf cricket ball, is used exclusively in Test cricket in nearly all of the major southern hemisphere cricket playing countries, including:- New Zealand, South Africa, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and of course, Australia. This cricket ball, is hand sewn, with a five layered quilt inside a four piece, selected First Grade Alum tanned Steer hide cover.Interestingly, it was the Australian Cricket Board that wrote to all the leading cricket ball manufacturers, asking them to send samples of their cricket balls, for testing and possible use in the first Ashes series, following world War 2.
