The Korfball European Championships have concluded this weekend, with a strong showing from the Home Nations. The overall winners were the Worlds number 1 team, Netherlands. The Netherlands overcame a very strong Belgium side in a closely fought final, coming out victors by 25 to 21. Europes top 8 teams, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Russia, England, Portugal, Catalonia and Germany played out the final round of matches to decide the order of merit within Europe. Catalonia produce a good run of results to finish in 5th place after beating England in the 5th/6th place play-off. Russia were disappointed with only finishing 8th after suffering a big loss to Portugal. Results. (1st) The Netherlands - 25 v 21 - Belgium (2nd) (3rd) Czech Republic - 18 v 11 - Germany (4th) (5th) Catalonia - 21 v 16 - England (6th) (7th) Portugal - 23 v 15 - Russia (8th) The new K5-IKF Korfball was use for the first time in a major Championship. All comments were positive and it looks like it could be rolled out over the next 2 years to be used in all major competitions. The honour of scoring the first goal with the new Korfball went to, stunning Raquel VARELA ALONSO from Catalonia.
