Here is a guide to show the standard sizes you are required to have for competitive match play, but please note if you are simply looking for a goal for the garden you will need to consider the size of garden as a priority.

Under 7's and Under 8's:

At this age the main aim for the players is to focus on developing the technical ability of the game. In matches though it is important that the FA regulations are followed, so at this age teams play 5 a side and the pitch size should 40 x 30 yards. Children in these age groups will use a size 3 ball and the goal size requirement is 12ft wide x 6ft high.

Under 9's and Under 10's:

Whilst at U9's and U10's level they play with the same size goals as the U8's which is 12ft wide x 6ft high they play 7 a side games. Also the U10's will step up to the size 4 ball now. The pitch size for these age groups should be 60 x 40 yards.

Under 11's and Under 12's:

When you reach U11's the amount of player's in each team increases to 9 per side. The pitch size for the U11's and U12's should be 80 x 50 yards and they will both use a size 4 ball. At this age the goal size required is 16ft wide x 7ft high.

Under 13's and Under 14's:

This is the age group where 11 a side football comes in to effect, whilst still playing on a relatively small pitch. The pitch size at this level should be 90 x 55 yards and the goals should measure 21ft wide x 7ft high. A size 4 ball is still used at these age groups.

Under 15's and Under 16's:

At U15's and U16's the players will use a size 5 football and the goal posts should measure 24ft wide x 8ft high. However at this age they will still play on a smaller pitch than the adults. The pitch measures 100 x 60 yards at these age groups.

Under 17's upwards:

This is the final transition into senior football and playing within professional pitch dimensions. The pitch size at this level should be 110 x 70 yards with the goal posts measuring 24ft wide x 8ft high. Players at this age will use a size 5 football.

Other Goal Options

Alternatively you can go down the route of a fixed unit that you simply bolt together and take apart. But these not only take a lot of time and effort but they also tend to be the larger goals so also take up a lot more space in your car. Yet with the smaller more portable friendly goals this is less of an issue, if you are looking for a quick portable option for the park or beach.
